Spotlight: TN AG Jonathan Skrmetti

Professional background: Jonathan Skrmetti was selected as Tennessee’s 28th attorney general by the Tennessee Supreme Court in August 2022, and assumed office on September 1, 2022. Prior to being selected as AG, he served as chief deputy attorney general to former AG Herbert Slatery III and then as chief counsel to Governor Bill Lee. Earlier in his career he worked in private practice and as an assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.

He has identified the key priorities for his first term as:

  • Prosecuting criminal activity.
  • Protecting Tennesseans from unfair and deceptive practices.
  • Fighting against the perceived federal overreach of the Biden Administration.

Education:  AG Skrmetti earned degrees from George Washington University and Hertford College, Oxford. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he was the editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy.

Personal: AG Skrmetti lives in Franklin with his wife and four children.
