Appointed Attorney General Positions

Several states will see attorney general turnover even though their AGs are appointed rather than elected.

In Alaska and Wyoming, the governors are term-limited in 2026, and because the governor appoints the attorney general in both states, new administrations could bring new AG leadership.

In Maine, Attorney General Aaron Frey is term-limited. Because the Maine Legislature elects the attorney general, the state is also guaranteed to see a transition in AG leadership in 2026.
