Spotlight: New Hampshire AG John Formella

Areas of focus since taking office include:

  1. Continuing the efforts of past New Hampshire Attorneys General to pursue companies responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic.
  2. Supporting the New Hampshire School Safety Resource Center, a centralized online resource for enhancing school safety preparedness. This is an initiative of the NH Governor’s School Safety Task Force.
  3. Partnering with other attorneys general on multistate initiatives that range from opposing proposed Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Rules to stamping out international scam calls.

Professional background: John Formella was appointed as New Hampshire’s Attorney General in March 2021 after former AG Gordon MacDonald was selected by Gov. Chris Sununu to serve as Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. From 2017 to his appointment, AG Formella served as Gov. Sununu’s Chief Legal Counsel. Prior to working for Gov. Sununu, he was an attorney at Pierce Atwood, one of northern New England’s largest firms. 

Education: AG Formella received his B.A. in English Literature and later an M.S. in Applied American Politics and Policy from Florida State University. He received his J.D. from George Washington University Law, where he was a member of the George Washington University International Law Review
