AG Griffin Reaches $32 Million Monsanto Settlement Over Environmental Contamination

  • Arkansas AG Tim Griffin has reached a settlement of at least $32 million and up to $80 million with Monsanto Company, Solutia, Inc., and a predecessor entity resolving claims that polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) manufactured by Monsanto caused environmental contamination.
  • According to the announcement of the settlement, Monsanto stopped manufacturing PCBs in the late 1970s before the federal government banned them in 1979, although Monsanto’s PCBs had been in circulation for nearly half a century.
  • AG Griffin asserts that Arkansans will receive at least $32 million per the settlement agreement with Monsanto and could receive up to $80 million depending on the outcome of separate litigation. These funds are restricted in nature and will be spent in furtherance of water quality.
