NY AG James and 1199SEIU’s Gresham Calls for Protection for Nursing Home Workers

  • New York AG Letitia James joined with 1199SEIU President George Gresham in calling for stronger protections for New York nursing home workers who have been among the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which claimed the lives of thousands of New York nursing home residents and essential workers.
  • A January 2021 report by AG James’ office revealed a host of inadequacies in the response of New York nursing homes to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including a lack of personal protective equipment for staff, lack of compliance with orders concerning communication with family members, and lack of adequate staffing in facilities, but AG James has now widened her focus to include the State’s nursing home workers, who have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19.
  • AG James and Gresham in particular emphasized the need for appropriate staff-to-resident ratios, improved wages, and more investment in facility operations.
