NY AG Puts Mental Health Ghost Network to Rest

  • New York AG Letitia James has announced an agreement with MVP Health Plan (MVP) following an investigation that found systemic problems with the insurer’s mental health provider network. The investigation revealed that MVP’s provider directory contained inaccurate information, creating a “ghost network” that left some members unable to access in-network care or forced them to pay out-of-network costs.
  • The agreement requires that MVP ensure that all listed providers are active and accepting new patients; verify provider participation every 90 days; establish protocols for responding to member inquiries; and implement a complaint monitoring system. MVP must also pay restitution to impacted members; invest in improving its provider network; and pay New York $250,000 in penalties, fees, and costs.
  • This agreement is the first resolution to result from the AG’s earlier report, Inaccurate and Inadequate: Health Plans’ Mental Health Provider Directories.
