WeChat Gets the Message: AGs Secure New Anti-Fentanyl Commitments

  • A bipartisan coalition of seven AGs led by North Carolina AG Jeff Jackson said WeChat agreed to new cooperation measures aimed at helping U.S. law enforcement disrupt fentanyl-related money laundering on the platform.
  • According to the coalition, the commitments follow an earlier demand letter raising concerns that traffickers and money launderers were using WeChat to help move fentanyl proceeds across borders.
  • In a follow-up letter, the coalition said that after a series of discussions, WeChat agreed to take several steps to assist investigators, including maintaining a dedicated law-enforcement contact, responding more quickly to emergency and preservation requests, and using AI tools and keyword blocking to detect and report unlawful content.
  • The coalition praised WeChat for making meaningful concessions but said Weixin, WeChat’s China-based sister app, still does not respond to U.S. law enforcement requests, leaving what the AGs described as a key cross-border enforcement gap—and the coalition’s next priority.
