AG Tong Launches Investigation Into Kik Messenger App

  • Connecticut AG William Tong announced an investigation into MediaLab.AI Inc. (MediaLab) concerning allegations related to age assurance practices and content moderation on its messaging app Kik, which allows users to send text messages, photos, videos, and join public or private group chats.
  • Connecticut has previously issued a notice of violation under the Connecticut Data Privacy Act (CTDPA) to MediaLab in July 2025 identifying alleged deficiencies in Kik’s privacy disclosures and mechanisms for exercising consumer data rights, including allegations that the platform processed certain sensitive data without obtaining the required consent.
  • As part of the investigation, the OAG has issued a new civil investigative demand seeking comprehensive information and records related to MediaLab’s data processing, content moderation, and age assurance practices that may contribute to unfair or deceptive acts or practices in violation of the CTDPA and Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act. Currently, the Connecticut OAG is also conducting ongoing investigations into the online platforms Roblox and TikTok.
