- Texas AG Ken Paxton reached a settlement with Samsung to resolve allegations that the company violated the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act by collecting user viewing data without their informed consent.
- According to the complaint, Samsung allegedly used Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology to track what consumers watched across apps, cable, and connected devices, and capitalized on that data for profit.
- The state further alleged that Samsung steered consumers into enabling ACR through unclear disclosures during device setup and made opting out difficult through multi-step menus and fragmented settings.
- According to the AG’s office, the settlement requires that Samsung halt any collection or processing of ACR viewing data without receiving express consent and must implement disclosures and consent screens that are clear and conspicuous.
