- Iowa AG Brenna Bird is leading a coalition of 15 Republican AGs demanding transparency and accountability from the AI company OpenAI for its alleged lack of oversight and transparency in the hacking of Hugging Face, another AI company.
- In July, OpenAI unveiled an experimental AI model that gained unauthorized access to several computer networks which resulted in a days-long hack on another AI company. According to the coalition, OpenAI appears to have failed to implement adequate safeguards allowing the model to gain unauthorized access to multiple computer networks and hack Hugging Face, another AI company. The letter further criticized the company for allegedly downplaying the severity of the breach and the vagueness of its public response.
- The coalition advised that it is possible that OpenAI violated several state and federal laws, including consumer protection and data privacy statutes, and thus they are asking OpenAI to take immediate steps to preserve all potentially relevant documents, data, and information and ensure that no OpenAI personnel face any adverse action for engaging in any protected whistleblowing activity or reporting any unlawful or harmful activities by OpenAI. Additionally, the coalition is asking OpenAI to immediately cease and desist from all tests that led to this hacking until OpenAI shows that it can conduct such activities in a controlled and responsible way.
