- Alabama AG Steve Marshall has subpoenaed OpenAI as part of an investigation into the company’s alleged lack of oversight and adequate safeguards in the hacking of Hugging Face, another AI company. The investigation comes after Alabama participated in a multi-state coalition letter sent earlier this month demanding transparency and accountability from OpenAI regarding the incident.
- In July, OpenAI launched an experimental AI model that, it later disclosed, gained unauthorized access to several computer networks, including a days-long hack on Hugging Face. Alabama is investigating whether OpenAI’s conduct violated Alabama’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act and other consumer protection laws.
- Earlier this month, we reported about the coalition led by Iowa AG Brenna Bird seeking transparency following the OpenAI security breach and urging OpenAI to immediately cease and desist from all tests that led to this hacking until OpenAI can demonstrate that it can conduct such activities in a controlled and responsible way. Additionally, Florida AG James Uthmeier sued OpenAI in June regarding consumer protection, product liability, and claims involving safety and reliability.
