Derek Schmidt was elected Attorney General of Kansas in 2010. Prior to his election, AG Schmidt was Senate Majority Leader in the Kansas State Senate, having served in the Kansas legislature since 2000. After graduating law school, AG Schmidt served in a number of public positions, including as an Assistant Attorney General and special counsel to the Governor. He also worked in private practice. AG Schmidt is running for governor in the 2022 election.
