- The FTC has reached a $4.85 million settlement with the global payment processor Nuvei Corporation and its subsidiaries, Nuvei International Group Limited, Nuvei Limited, SafeCharge Digital Limited, and Nuvei Technologies Inc. over allegations that the firm provided payment processing services to merchants that were engaged in alleged deceptive conduct, including technology and support scams that allegedly resulted in more than $30 million in consumer payments to Reimage, an offshore tech support operation, from 2017 to 2023.
- Additionally, the complaint alleges that Nuvei, through its merchant acquiring bank registered in Cyprus, provided payment processing accounts to Reimage and other overseas tech support businesses, allowing them to accept credit card payments from consumers in the United States and elsewhere.
- The FTC previously took action against the operators of Reimage in 2024 and filed a lawsuit in 2025 against Europe-based payment processor Paddle, alleging that the company facilitated Reimage’s payment processing through its “merchant of record” platform. The FTC further alleges that Nuvei’s US- based subsidiary, Nuvei Technologies Inc., opened and maintained merchant accounts for merchants allegedly selling business opportunities with false earnings claims and merchants that other payment processors or acquiring banks previously terminated for excessive chargebacks or fraud.
- Under the order with the FTC, Nuvei will pay $4.85 million for consumer redress, and the defendants are also prohibited from engaging in unfair or deceptive payment processing practices like those alleged in the complaint, including providing payment services to any person selling tech support products or services by telemarketing or by pop-up messages relating to security or performance issues on a computer or other device, and to screen and monitor its existing and prospective clients, including clients in certain merchant categories such as outbound telemarketing.
