Bills Severing EPA from Risk Assessment Research Draw Heat from Democratic AGs

  • A group of 14 Democratic AGs sent a letter to U.S. Senate and House leaders urging them to oppose efforts to prohibit the EPA from using human health risk assessments and to dismantle the EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD), the research arm of the EPA.
  • In the letter, the AGs recommend that Congress oppose Senate Bill 623 and House Bill 1415, which would prohibit the EPA from using assessments studying human health impacts from exposure to different levels of chemicals in regulatory actions and other processes. The AGs argue that the states rely extensively on human health risk assessments and research conducted by ORD to take actions to protect their residents from risks associated with exposure to toxic chemicals.
  • The letter also argues that prohibiting the EPA from relying on human health risk assessments and dissolving the ORD would make it difficult for the EPA to meet its statutory requirements of using the best available science to inform its work.
