- Missouri AG Catherine Hanaway opened a formal investigation into allegations that TikTok misled families and exposed children to harmful content through the platform’s design and operation. The AG’s office issued a civil investigative demand (CID) requiring TikTok to provide information on its recommendation algorithms, including how they use engagement data to select and promote content on TikTok and TikTok for Younger Users, in order to examine whether TikTok designed features to increase screen time among young users and its collection and use of data from children, minors, and young adults.
- Separately, Florida AG James Uthmeier filed a lawsuit against Discord, alleging that the platform marketed itself to families as safe for children while failing to verify users’ ages, protect minors from contact with strangers, or prevent predators from using the app. The lawsuit alleges violations of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act and Florida’s law protecting children in online spaces, as well as claims for negligence, negligent misrepresentation, and public nuisance. AG Uthmeier is seeking to permanently bar Discord from the alleged practices, civil penalties, and the forfeiture of funds and property obtained from Florida consumers, consumer restitution, damages, and attorneys’ fees and costs.
- Additionally, Arizona AG Kris Mayes has filed a petition for enforcement of civil investigative demands issued to Roblox Corporation as part of an ongoing investigation into the potential violations of the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act, including allegedly failing to adequately protect Arizona children from sexual exploitation, violent content, and other age-inappropriate material and misrepresenting its safety features to parents and consumers. The AG is seeking a court order requiring Roblox to produce data and documents related to child safety on its platform, sought in two civil investigative demands to Roblox in May and August 2026, and the AG is also asking the court to hold the company in contempt until it complies.
